Understanding the effects of the Windows /3GB switch

The 32-bit versions of Windows XP Professional and Windows Server 2003 and later support a /3GB switch that allocates an additional 1 GB of virtual memory for applications and reduces the allocation of virtual memory for the operating system to1 GB. Enabling this option can resolve or prevent some “Out of Memory” errors. The additionalvirtual memory can be used to support more users or increase the database cache sizes.

Note    The following task applies to Meridian 32-bit editions when run on a Windows 32-bit operating system only. For information about running Meridian 32-bit and 64-bit editions on a Windows 64-bit operating system, see BlueCielo support for 64-bit Windows operating systems in the BlueCielo knowledge base.

To enable the /3GB switch, modify the boot.ini file located in the root of the boot drive (by default, C:) on the server as described in Memory Support and Windows Operating Systems on the MSDN website
